7th Edition Released
By Mike DeZarn
7th Edition is here!!! All the hype about the new set is looking to be not just hype after all. The new 7th Edition is looking to be a solid set. The new artwork is great and it's nice seeing some of the old guys back in action again. I'll try to give you some of the info about this latest expansion.
The entire set will contain 350 cards with all new artwork. All of the foils from 7th Edition will sport black-borders, unlike the rest of the cards that will have the classic white border. A little under half of the cards will be new to the basic set and will be drawn from all expansions up to Urzas Destiny.
7th Edition will come in Booster packs and a different kind of Starter. Booster packs contain 15 cards each and one of those is a basic land. I know that a lot of you out there are up to your eyeballs in land, but it is good for the new players and for just having the extra land in case you, or a friend need it. The Starter will come with two 30-card decks, a CD-rom, play mats and counters. These Starters are made mainly to introduce people to Magic that have never played it before so they may not appeal to the veteran gamers out there.
There are also 5 theme decks offered from the new 7th Edition that draw their cards from only one color each. These theme decks are Armada for White, Bomber for Blue, Decay for Black, Way Wild for Green and Infestation for Red. Some of the cards featured in these theme decks are Fallen Angel, Thorn Elemental and Ancestral Memories. Each of these can be expanded and retooled to better suit your playing style or can be played as they are.
There are spoiler lists already popping up all over the internet, but in case you haven't seen any of them yet, I'll list a few of the cards that I personally look forward to acquiring. From Red there is Earthquake, Goblin King and the Shivan Dragon. In White we find Northern Paladin, Wrath of God and the classic Serra Angel all decked out in her new armor and ready to smite some evil. Then we have Blue with Lord of Atlantis making a return along with the Prodigal Sorcerer ("Tim") and Telepathy. Black is back with Nightmare, Stronghold Assassin and the Fallen Angel. The last of the colors is Green, which has Creeping Mold, Thorn Elemental and the Birds of Paradise which is back to put that upstart Utopia Tree back in it's place.
Some of the old Artifacts have been dusted off and brought back into the gaming table again. Coat of Arms, Millstone and Howling Mine are just three of these to resurface. Lands have also returned. Three of the six returning lands are the Adarkar Wastes, Karplusan Forest and the City of Brass, which has some of the best artwork in the entire set.
