For Whom Does the Bell Toll? It Tolls For Dominaria.
By Mike DeZarn
Today, Apocalypse was released and Dominaria will never be the same again. Some of the heroes that you have read about for years will die and the world itself may not be able to withstand the assault led by Yawgmoth himself. Apocalypse looks like it is going to live up to its name.
The Apocalypse expansion is the last and final part in the Invasion cycle. It will include 143 cards (44 rares, 44 uncommons and 55 commons) and random foil premium cards. Just like in Invasion and Planeshift, there will be all-new game mechanics to shake up the tourney scene and the friendly games as well like enemy pain lands and enemy activation costs on some creatures. Here are some of the new features in Apocalypse:
Envoys - When these come into play, your reveal the top four cards of your library and any revealed with the same creature type as the "envoy" are put into your hand (one allows you to put any creature into your hand). The rest are placed on the bottom of your library in any order.
Syphon Creatures - New Phyrexians that allow you a one-time trade of an amount of life for a like amount of cards.
Whirlpool Creatures - New blue creatures that allow you to shuffle your library into your hand and then draw that many cards.
Bloodfire Creatures - Red creatures and enchantments that can be sacrificed to do an amount of damage to creatures and players alike.
Penumbra Creatures - Green creatures with the ability to bring a black token creature of the same power/toughness into play whenever the original is put into a graveyard. (Penumbra Wurm: 6/6 with Trample, bring a 6/6 Black Token with Trample into play if sent to graveyard)
Flagbearer Creatures - White gets creatures that basically have a large target painted on them. As long as you have one in play, any spell or ability your opponent plays that can target a Flagbearer must target a Flagbearer. If a spell has multiple targets, only one of the targets needs to be a Flagbearer.
Enemy Pain Lands - Pay 1 life for enemy mana. 'Nuff said.
Enemy Split Cards - Just like the split cards from Invasion, but with enemy colors.
Disciples - These new creatures are somewhat like the Apprentices from Invasion but their abilities are activated through enemy colors.
Volvers - These creatures have two enemy color kickers on them. They start off small, but grow into huge creatures by paying one or both of the enemy-color kicker costs.
Sanctuaries - Enchantments that gives help you out in some way during your upkeep if you control a permanent of an enemy color, and aid you even more if you control permanents of both enemy colors listed on them.
This looks to be the end for Dominaria. Can a handful of heroes manage to stop the devastating onslaught of Yawgmoth and his Phyrexian army? Only time will tell. Make sure you are there to see who is still standing after the smoke clears.
The Apocalypse is upon you…
