The southern French city of Carcassonne was founded on an important trade route between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Because of its strategic location, the city was often conquered and has had many rulers. As a result of this varied history, the city is famous for its unique mixture of Roman and Medieval fortifications.

The players develop the area around Carcassonne by placing land tiles. Each turn the area becomes larger as the players expand and add roads, fields, cities, and cloisters. As the players have only a few followers, the wise player will plan his moves carefully and deploy followers when and where he can earn the most points.

Especially good for two players.

**** I love this game. My family loves this game. Awesome game of strategy, and also easily played by children-- without the behind your back sneakiness, of course...

***** Excellent game. Every session is different. The rules are clear, sensible, and not tedious to learn, but you'll need to refer to the instructions for scoring the first few times. This game is absorbing, visually attractive, easily resumed after a break (if small mammals do not have access to the gaming table), and can be modified to suit the time you have to play. We haven't played with more than 2 players, but it seems it would lend itself well to larger groups, particularly with the addition of expansions. (The core game might be a bit short with more than 3 or 4 players.) We have most of the expansions and will be getting the rest of them. All in all, our favorite game after Chaos Marauders.
