| Descent: Journeys in the Dark!takes players on a fantastic quest for riches and fame. You play one of a party of adventurers, exploring the fathomless depths of a dungeon, facing down hordes of orcs, undead, and all the awful fiends to be found in the dark places below the world we know.
Descent: Journeys in the Dark! is played on a constructible modular board, allowing you to experience a different dungeon every time you play the game.

Descent is a huge dungeon-crawling board game from Fantasy Flight Games. It is by the same maestro and company who created the Doom board game. It is basically a fantasy adventure played out on board tiles that represent underground rooms and corridors that are populated by all sorts of horrific monsters and animals. It is the heroes task to battle these creatures and traps to accomplishh various missions or objectives.
One player acts as the 'Dungeon Master' and controls the set up and actions of the monsters, the other players (up to 4) act as adventurers. each character has varying attributes and strengths and it is up to the players to organise their dungeon delving heroes accordingly. Combat is frequent and exciting, carryed out by dice rolling.
Descent is beautifully produced, the cards colourful and board tiles impressive. The minitures are detailed but really improve with painting. They look unfinished if you place them on the board unpainted.
Descent seems well balanced, unlike the impossibly difficult Doom board game, and a fun time is guaranteed all around. I recommend this game as an introduction to Fantasy Role Playing Games because it gives a tactile, visually impressive game that will spark teh player's imagination and hopefully lead them on to fully-blown RPGs such as Advanced Dungeons & Dragons or Runequest where their imaginations can really take flight.
We should support such high quality game designers. Fanatasy Flight Games have really raised the bar on production values. Recommended -- By Anonymous from UK on September 04, 2006 |
