The great thing about Diplomacy is that it is a board based RPG that involves no luck. Players make and break strategic alliances to try to take control of the supply centers of Europe. It's kind of like the WWI European powers on "Survivor." There will be alliances, and lies, and eventually broken alliances.
This is the best historical re-enactment game I have ever played. The rules and board layout force players to look to their neighbors for targets and allies. While you may not always choose the ally your country chose in WWI, you will consider it, and the advantages and disadvantages it would bring.
The major disadvantage of Diplomacy is that it takes an incredibly long time to play a game. Games I've played often went longer than 12 hours playing time. I believe a minimum of 4 platers are required, and the game is best when played with the maximum 7. -- By Tom Myers from Rockledge, FL USA on September 19, 2006 |
