| Axis & Allies depicts Wacht am Rhein (Watch on the Rhein), the German code name for this counteroffensive that took place toward the end of World War II. The objective: to capture the port city of Antwerp. It was expected that the capture of Antwerp would cause a great disruption in the flow of Allied supplies, and also have the effect of breaking apart the great Anglo-American alliance.
One player controls Germany, whose massive build up of forces have gone undetected by the Allies and are poised to unleash all their fury on the Allies. The other player controls the forces of the United Kingdom and the United States and they must stem the tide of German armor and hold their positions until reinforcements arrive. |

I've played 2 games so far. The first I was Germany and I crushed the Allies by the 6th turn.
The 2nd game was "match play" and the Germans won again, though as the Allies, I gave a bit of a tussle.
All of Germany's combat ground forces were on the board and it was the 7th turn. My friend had to make a good
solid final push. And he did. He actually finished with what would have been 29 points!
I feel the Allies have a very challenging time, as they have to shimmy back & forthe, North to South and try to
block the German onslaught.
Also, some of the air combat rules are a bit convoluted to me. I don't know why the airstrip hits don't wrap around like the ground combat strips do.
There are some other rules that seem ambiguous. For instance, only in the example of ground combat on p 14,
is mentioned that to split an attack, the attacker has to use 2 supply chips. Except for Blitzing, this is the only such
reference. Also, it's not clear whether Blitzing negates the must stop in enemy cities rule or if the must stop in cities is an exception to the Blitz rule. Also, during set-up, I've found that there aren't enough US infantry.
I have more situations but not enough allowance for them.
Still, I wouldn't mind playing more. 2 games especially match play aren't enough to gauge a game. -- By Anonymous from Rochester, NY USA on December 08, 2006 |
