*** This is a good, but EXTREMELY over-rated card.

-- By I should be working from My place of employment on March 01, 2011

**** I know this card is epic, which can force the opponent to discard any nonland card by paying 2 life, but I rather use Duress or something like that than buy this card....

-- By Anonymous from Volcanic Mountains on January 22, 2011

**** This is a very good card, but a little over-priced, I think. If you are looking for some cheaper alternatives, check out Blackmail, Duress, and Ostracize. They are a fraction of the cost and just as good in a lot of situations.

***** With 4 of this card and 4 Duress, the opponent's hand will be void in no time.... For me, It's fair paying 2 Life to spying and robbing hand at the same time.... great card.

-- By Anonymous from Indonesia on September 04, 2010

**** Are you kidding? "Encroach" just can take nonbasic land card! This card can take a non-land card! That's the same for you???? Oh brother.....

  -- By Anonymous from ??? on July 10, 2010

***** ...yeah this card is totally awesome... cheers with this and extirpate...

-- By Mar Roxas from Toy Kingdom on May 11, 2010

***** turn 1 thoughtseize plus turn 2 hymn ruins any opening hand, I don't care what format. Throw in duress and or unmask.....EVIL! Plus thoughtseize just rips apart combo decks when used with extirpate.

-- By erik from Colorado on March 21, 2009

**** definitely a staple. especially important in b/w tokens, since a platinum angel is a win against them. however, the 2 life isn't trivial, and not being able to discard lands means you can't grab one of their only lands...

-- By greg from here on March 05, 2009

*** its awesome but not better than encroach

  -- By Nate from 321321 on February 04, 2009

***** This and Extirpate...the cards everyone loves to use and hates to get nailed by. With even a couple of each, let alone a discard deck, most opponents will run out of options very quickly...

-- By Luca from Praha CZ on July 22, 2008

***** Wow. Mono black control just got more popular.

-- By Geckle from RI on April 02, 2008

***** Great card. This is going to be a 4-of for every black deck there ever will be.

-- By Drew from Weston, MA, USA on February 12, 2008

**** Besides being a great card, you gotta just love the art work. PLEASE Troll and Toad, get some foil versions in stock.

-- By Tony from Levittown, PA. on February 02, 2008

***** this card is broken it is lik insane for most black decks and is allot beter than duress because you can get a creature out of their hand unlik duress

-- By Anonymous from Chicago, IL on December 11, 2007

***** There is no better early disruption. Although not a staple in every black deck, this has proven itself to be exceptionally great. It loses its usefulness against agressive, fast decks, but wrecks control and combo decks. If you're playing it, the worst it should ever be is a sideboard card.

-- By Anonymous from Jurai on December 01, 2007

**** I think its a touch overhyped - like Tarmogoyf and Garruk. Still, it can nail creatures, which is worth two life - even in extended. Duress is not as good, even in vintage where you will see a lot less creatures its worth two life for those few creatures you do see - two life is hardly going to make a difference. If you play duress in Type 1/1.5 or Extended why not play 4 of each? Really, I think its worth least right now where most of the decks are resilient to having to discard a card, and the only real combos out there are heavily protected with counters. If only it were an instant - there would be no contest amongst similar spells.

-- By Kristopher from Dagobah on November 24, 2007

***** Use this card to discard a huge creature card of your choice from your own hand on your first turn. Bring that card into play with an Animate Dead on your second turn. If your opponent isn't crying at this point, its because they've given up

-- By Patrick Kelley from The Shire, NH on November 17, 2007

***** DELICIOUS!

-- By Anonymous from Melbourne, Australia on November 10, 2007

**** Hype has been fueling this card's price. It is amazing in standard, but in vintage and extended where duress still is playable, this is inferior to it. People will take note of its usefulness in early game only, and the card's price should drop. Good, but overhyped. Go and buy duress instead.

-- By Anonymous from Jurai on November 02, 2007

***** 4 Thoughtsieze + 4 Extirpate = Cripple any deck. Def worth it.

-- By SKW from The 607, NY on October 22, 2007

*** Ill sell mine. hope i dont run into is a states

-- By Bill from Kentucky on October 17, 2007

***** Wow... more fuel for discard. Distress, Stupor, Funeral Charm, Hippys, what else are they gonna do for type 2 discard? Bring hymn back? lol

-- By Tom from Hammond, IN on October 16, 2007

***** Very good card, but the price seems way too expensive. 4 of these and 4 of Duress are just darn too good. I rate 5 because its one mana + 2 life for any nonland card. I don't feel the 2 life or it being a sorcery a drawback. It being one mana itself for a awesome ablilty is all that matters.

-- By Black Power from Swamps on October 12, 2007

***** Duress just got upgraded. Bravo to Magic design team on this one!

-- By Grimancer from Centurion, SA on October 04, 2007

***** Solid card. They just had to make it rare.

-- By funkymagee from seattle on October 01, 2007

***** this card is amazing and is going to be a staple in every format
