Planeswalker: Liliana Vess
Garruk Vs. Liliana Singles

Ever since Magic the Gathering was first released in 1993, the game was meant to represent two clashing wizards doing battle. It wasn't until the release of Lorwyn in late 2007, that this concept became tangible, as the card type, Planeswalker. Planeswalkers are the embodiment of the player, powerful mages that spend their lifetimes traveling the multiverse and learning new spells.

Planeswalkers in Play:
Planeswalkers are played at sorcery speed and come into play with a number of loyalty counters on them, found at the bottom right of the card where a creatures power/toughness is located. Since they are not creatures, they cannot attack or block, instead planeswalkers have abilities that you can activate once per turn. Each ability can either generate or cost loyalty counters. A planeswalker can be attacked and it takes damage by losing loyalty counters, when the planeswalker reaches zero loyalty counters the card is placed in the graveyard as a state-based effect.

Why you should use this card:
Liliana Vess is the archetype of what black decks can do. This demonic beauty costs a converted five, two black and three colorless and enters the battlefield with five loyalty counters. She is poised to cause some trouble for your opponent, her first ability lets you gain one counter and makes your opponent discard a card. Have some fun with this ability by adding Megrim into the mix and make them take two damage whenever they discard. Costing two counters, her second ability allows you to have a Demonic Tutor at your disposal. Her final ability lets you put all creatures from all graveyards under your control. Liliana Vess also works well with Jace Beleren in black/blue mill decks.

**** I recently bought one of these cards along with some others and a bunch of dice. When i had received the cards, the liliana vess was nicked in the corner very badly. I was displeased, especially since it was intended to be a gift for my brother. I know this sort of thing doesn't happen that much and i hope to receive better service on my next order.

***** Now this is a great buy! Now it's just a matter of seeing how well Liliana plays in my deck.

**** This card is great, comboing it up with an abyssal specter and a megrim works really good.

**** She's look like not much for me, but together with Jace Beleren and Sensei's of Divining Top, they will give any cards you want! I agree that she's the best planeswalker, but just for support your movement's.

*** to jay thomas, nice combo, but, how about this one; first turn, underground sea, lotus petal, sac lotus petal, sol ring, tap sol ring for 2 colorless, tap underground sea, TINKER sol ring, can any one say DARKSTEEL COLOSUSS? or BOSCH or PENTIVIS? TURN ONE BABY! there usually no turn 3 where i play, if you cant do your combo by the second turn, its time for scoop phase!. and you better be playing force of wills and boomerangs where i play, that is the only way you can win.

***** Here's what is in my favorite deck, first turn, Lotus Petal, Mox Diamond, Sol Ring, Grim Monolith or Mana Vault, sac Petal, tap diamond for a swamp, Liliana Vess. Vess for Strip Mine, second turn Vess for Crucible of Worlds. Third turn, Game over.

***** Very dangerus if you can protect this card for long enough. Only one flaw is that on multi player games it causes everyone to attack you.

**** She's my favourite Planeswalker card, actually. Though of course most people want Garuk, I was happy to pull her from a pack instead. Her Finisher ability might never get used (and the mechanics get tricky) but a free opponent discard every turn she stays alive is what I like best about her, not even the card search. Think of it this way, if you use discard twice before she dies, you've still gotten rid of two cards off your opponent for only the loss of one. And if you didn't get to use it twice? Well then they still wasted resources destroying her quickly and you still broke even with one discard.

***** definitely awesome, a true power house. even if an opponent manages to keep anything in their hand, anything discarded may come back to haunt them...

***** The main question here, let's be honest, is would you? there's vicious rumours that Bassam likes a bit of Garruk though. I am not saying anything.

***** in combo with Jace Beleren and Truamatize gives you a huge amount of creatures for almost nothing and milling the person at the same time.

*** liliana is good but she isn't the best out....garruk is.much better for the fact that he makes beasties to overrun with abd he basicly reduces the cost of everything by two...what's not to love bout him?

-- By aaron from indianapolis, indiana on June 03, 2008

***** This has got to be the best one out there. All the other planeswalkers have two medium abilities, and then one really good one, but this lets you strip you opponents hand, dig cards out of your libraries, and then resurect everything. The only problem is like all planeswalkers it can be hard to protect.

-- By Geckle from RI on March 20, 2008

***** Best planeswalker out there. Even Garruk doesn't compare.

-- By Bassam from Canada on March 02, 2008

**** May need to be a five star card, what is not to love on this one? A tutor card in itself makes it a very nice card, but to get all creatures out of the graveyard, in multi-player WOW, and put them all under your control!?! Then to top it off make your opponent discard a card as well. The only downside is the cost to get her out so make sure you have four dark rituals so she works for you quicker. Nice.
