***** This bad boy was only a couple hundred dollars when I started M:TG in 1995. I wish I would have bought one back then.

***** 5 stars are not enough to rate this Grand Daddy ... I wish I had one...

-- By Puke Ko Mabaho from India on January 05, 2011

-- By darren from hamilton ont canada on October 07, 2010

**** okay, so I get it that black lotus is a very good card. but 2000?! dude, if you spend that much money on that card... wow that's just crazy..... I don't even think it's legal for something to sell for that much...

-- By Anonymous from cloud nine on September 22, 2010

***** Definitely one of the most powerful cards in the game. When I was a new player, I heard about the Black Lotus and thought "ok, so I get three more mana to use for one turn. big frickin' deal". About a month later, I was watching the last two players at a tournament. The first guy's turn was this... Swamp Black Lotus, Tap swamp for B to play Dark Ritual, play Hypnotic Specter, sac lotus, play Royal Assassin. I almost wet myself. Keep in mind I had been playing for less than 2 months at the time. I had never seen anything like it. It was then that I realized the amazing potential of the Lotus. On a side note, why did Trollandtoad remove a bunch of reviews that used to be posted here? I wanted to show a friend some of the crazy reviews that said what a horrible card the Lotus is, but they aren't here anymore. What's the story with that? Anyway, the only negative thing I can find about the Lotus is the price. After all, it is still just a piece of cardboard, right?

-- By Jim from Madison, WI on September 15, 2010

***** I've only ever seen two myself, and I was surprised with how the first guy just flashed it around. With the cards now costing upwards about 20 grand for a certified mint, I'd keep it under lock, key, and climate storage. I guess that doesn't compare to the Friday night Magic I was dragged to one week. The guy was actually playing with one in his deck, had found the Alpha or Beta set at a Thrift store and bought it thinking it was starter. It was a shame, because it had obviously been played with a few times and had the wear and tear, but he just smiled at me and my shocked expression.... Told me that he didn't care if it was worth a million, he just enjoyed playing the game. Real nice guy. I think the card is excellent, obviously it has a lot of versatility, but as the poster card for MTG, I think it's slightly over-rated and hyped up just a little bit.

-- By Courtanah from Nawlins on August 21, 2010

***** wicked, sick, nasty, magic card of all time.

-- By rye from las pinas, phillipines on August 15, 2010

***** anyone would want this and it shows for how much it is and if i were to come across 1 i would never give it away

-- By Anonymous from Baltimore, MD USA on July 21, 2010

***** I do not agree with what you say here about Black Lotus, not being best card, but rather best combo cards. Upon sacrificing it you can return it to hand to replay and combination. But against counterspell I dont think so unless your opponent is trying to use Chanel + Fireball. Then I think sure winner!

-- By Jace B. from banding on July 21, 2010

***** haha wow i have seen 1 in my entire life. that is from my idle. believe it or not its my art teacher. he owns everyone. he sais that his deck isnt good but that is a lot of bs. with his black lotus and a couple of other cheap cards he owns. black lotus is a must have card. i hope to buy one when i get older but who knows probally 10,000$ when i get 21 :) but the economy will probally be really bad also anyways for whoever says this card is good for nothing fails at magic and fails at life i mean just think of having 2-3 of em you could get a 10/10 out right away :o its unreal some of these people who play magic have no idea what so ever. well half day of school and last day.. time for another attempt to beat him but i doubt it he will probally get his black lotus and bam i will be dead. a swamp deck is a failure with all its cheap instants ( i have deak that pwns) and i will not be dumb so i shall use green. wish me luck:) ps buy the black lotus if you are really serious about the card game MAGIC!

-- By derek from Luck, Wisconsin Usa on June 04, 2010

***** Lets see. I started playing magic in 1995. I was 12, and Ice Age was coming out. I thought cards like scaled worm and clockworm avian were the best ever. When I discovered THE LOTUS I thought "okay I get 3 mana.... then what." I had no idea what this card is could mean. Now I Do. The card is beautiful in its power and art. Now that I have the money to own one... I will.

-- By Anonymous from Ga on June 01, 2010

***** The best card in MTG. P9 for a reason.

-- By Jeremiah L. from IL USA on May 21, 2010

***** best card in the game, period.

-- By Greg from USA on January 23, 2010

***** This card is amazing. There is so much potential for it if you draw more than one your first turn and/or get yourself one or two via Demonic Tutor or other such cards...

-- By withheld009 from Somewhere in this universe on January 07, 2010

***** some people should really understand how to play the game. while this is an expensive card money wise. its a great card. wish i had one. but it costs way too much for me.

-- By Michael from Kentucky on September 20, 2009

***** 1st) It's RARE and one of the origional mack daddies. 2nd) It's free mana! 'Nuff Said. 3rd) Its expensive because it can be, people want them and there aren't alot of them. 4th) It's only overrated if you don't have one, lol. I wish all the MTG cards followed the theme of this card, just look at it... it screams Magic. The new cards have changed so much. I'm an original player and back then you'd NEVER see a Magic card with metal buildings and tigers wearing polished metal armor, aliens, blah blah... it was all old world fantasy based stuff; flying carpets, genies, djinns, dragons, knights etc etc... A blast from the past, and will always be the original leader of the P9!

-- By Jim from NJ on April 28, 2009

***** This baby is like combining an Atomic Pile-Driver with a Death-State sleeper hold! You have as much chance defeating it as yo mama has of being crowned WWE champion! This WILL someday be the first million dollar card - so get'em while they're incredibly cheap!

-- By Captain America from Where do ya think? on March 26, 2009

***** This IS a very good card, hence the five stars. It IS a major status symbol and the holy grail of MTG but it is by no means the best card in the game. Yes you can first turn kill with it but thats not the only way. Land + Lotus Petal ---> Flash out Protean Hulk ---> it dies ---> search for Disciples of the Vault and a Carrion Feeder and a bunch of zero mana artifact creatures.... thats four cards, same as Channel-Fireball. (I hope I didn't miss a step) But anyway ancestral recall is simply amazing and that card most likely deserves best card ever. And I'm surprised at the amount of people who just leave it with "BEST CARD EVER" and don't even think it through. Oh and also with the combo above you can win on turn 0 if you have that land that you can start the game with it in play if you remove another card in your hand from the game.

-- By Felduir from BC, Canada on February 18, 2009

***** 3 mana of any color on the first turn. Amazing.

-- By Justin from CO on January 03, 2009

***** If you think this card is anything less than a 4 or 5 star rating, you are a noob, and a lousy Magic player. The potential of this card is unmatchable in any other card. It fits into any deck, and can be used for amazing 1 or 2 turn kills. There are NOT a million common cards that are better. If you can't figure out why this is the greatest magic card ever made, go back to playing a little kiddie TCG because you obviously don't get MTG. This gives you a 2 to 3 card advantage, and in every magic game, the winner 99% of the time comes down to card advantage. You need to take your game to the next level if you think this card is bad at all.

  -- By 4wallz from Florida on September 28, 2008

***** Real game I had: I go first Play black lotus, Tolorian Academy Tap then sac to play masticore Opponent "Okay I give up".

-- By Anonymous from In your face on June 12, 2008

***** great card!

-- By Anonymous from Keep me anonymous on May 10, 2008

***** i bow to the holy grail, the one they call "black lotus''.

-- By justin from BC, Canada on April 20, 2008

***** Black Lotus IS the best card in the game. It is and always will be the Holy Grail of ALL magic cards.

-- By Tony from Phila. Pa. on March 15, 2008

***** I remember when I first saw this card I fell in love. Too bad I can't play my four in one deck.

-- By The Dude from You know that one place on February 20, 2008

***** Perfect for any deck!

-- By Bob from Pwnville, OHIO on January 17, 2008

***** Black Lotus has only become better after the "storm" ability entered the stage

-- By Patrick from Denmark on November 20, 2007

***** This card has been banned from Magic The Gathering,I think... Anyway, still a Tremendous Powerful Card :D

-- By HellGhast from Portugal on February 06, 2007

**** Besides the fact that it kicks you in the head and steals your wallet a very good card.

-- By Anonymous from inside my head on January 20, 2007

***** when you are a magic player, you pray to the Lotus.

-- By Anonymous from Singapore on September 27, 2006

***** This card is great first turn two hypnotic specter.....hand.....2 swamp..dark ritual...2 hypnotic...black lotus...hymn to tourach....

-- By A-FLo from calgary, AB, Canada on July 31, 2006

***** There is nothing better than the original black lotus!

-- By Anonymous from Mars on January 29, 2006

***** Black Lotus, the best and most wanted card ever. You may summon one mana each turn, but this gives you permament controll over 3 mana. Not a single card can messure itself with this flower. 4 of these in your deck and you're in theory unbeateble. Worth every cent... If you are a serrious player that is.

-- By M!kke/Soulless Child from Sweden on January 09, 2006

***** Obviously, one of the greatest power cards in the game. I used it in tourney play and once or twice got out the lotus, mox and a duel land and brought out a ball lightning and berserked it. Then proceded to sack it to the dreadnought! WOW!

-- By Shandolf from Richland, WA.USA on April 22, 2005

***** I don't know how anyone can say this card is not good. You obviously have never used one before. It's the best card in Magic for sheer balance of speed and power, don't bother trying to argue the point.

-- By Greg from Halifax, NS Canada on April 09, 2005

***** This is the best magic the gathering mana accelerator they ever created. Sure there may be super lotus in unhinged that is coming out even though I might order a box just to get super morphling, s.n.o.t, or jackass

-- By Anonymous from menomonee falls, wi usa on November 19, 2004

***** best land/artifact ever! need 3 or 4 for my sliver deck but this card rocks!

-- By Anonymous from hephzibah, georgia on September 16, 2004

***** Best card in the game. Period.

-- By Anonymous from Houston, TX on July 25, 2004

***** Anyone that would give this card a bad rating is insane there is no way this card could be bad, it's obvious that this card is going to get the ratings it does.

-- By Hellfyre from BAHSTAN on June 16, 2004

***** This is deffinetly one of the best cards in magic any type 1 player of course would like to have one im still trying to get one before the price goes up more this card can make any deck better for the most part

-- By Anonymous from USA on April 02, 2004

***** This is a sick card! A must have if you like collecting good magic cards. Definately elite!

  -- By from on March 21, 2004

***** Definetly the most broken card in magic. I dont know where you can find a NM Black Lotus from Alpha this days... It's very expensive... but worth it.

-- By Jose Hinostroza from Lima, Peru on March 15, 2004

***** i love this card ive been collecting this card for so long i have 15 black lotus's and two full puzzles. i lve them my deck have four in it and it runs the deck i play this deck everywhere because the lotus's are in bad condition. anyone got lotus

-- By kaipo naks from hawaii on March 09, 2004

***** Black lotus is possibly the most powerful card in magic.

  -- By from on February 28, 2004

***** THE HOLY GRAIL ITSELF! 'NUFF SAID

  -- By CLAUDEKORN from LAFONTAINE,QC,CANADA on February 17, 2004

**** Those of you who rate this card at one have never seen its potential in red you have the possibilty of doing 12 damage first turn. Yes its a possibility not certain but it beats the rest of the junk you guys would rather have.

-- By Matt from Maineville, OH on January 01, 2004

***** Can't describe all the combinations this card has... i could put out an entire deck of creatures using this card and all of those creatures would have at least 100/100 using a recycle, coat of arms, concordant crossroads and a bunch of cheap elves like llanowars, fyndhorns and priest of titanias.

-- By Anonymous from maine on December 23, 2003

* This is the worst card I have ever seen in my 9 years of playing Magic. I mean really, it costs 0 and u can use 3 mana on your first turn, that gets out a concordant crossroad, which stinks extremely bad, and 2 llanowar, which you use to get a really bad card, priest of titania who uses it for a priest and a llanowar, which gets out kamhal fist of krosa, and next turn you win the game. I mean really this combination is horrible.

-- By Zack Dumlao from Atlana Georgia on December 21, 2003

***** hahahaha, I cant believe I'm actually making a review on this card. This card does not have a five rating it should have a 500,000,000 rating. Best card ever, no doubt about it!

-- By Anonymous from california on November 14, 2003

***** 3 Words, Lotus, Channel Fireball.. Kill your opponent on first turn.. The ONLY card that allows you to do it.. In my mind, this is the BEST and ONLY card that could kill someone in the first draw.. Ancestral can't do it.. Sorry..

-- By Edgey Boy from TO on September 03, 2003

***** What are the 2 things that have always made T1 so powerful? Card Drawing and Mana acceleration. This card, in a sense, gives you a 3-turn head start on your opponent. AND it fits in nearly 99% of all T1 decks. It is expensive, definately not worth the money, (You'll never win enough tournaments, just because of it, to pay yourself back -and all the big tournies are T2 now) but it's just so fun to whip one out and see the jaws drop.

-- By Grayson from Louisville, KY on September 01, 2003

***** This card, is only the best of the world

-- By ME from My home on April 25, 2003

***** This card, is only the best of the world

-- By ME from My home on April 25, 2003

***** The best card in the game!

-- By Anonymous from on April 16, 2003

***** Any one that says this card isn't the best in the world, can come to my house and have their butts kicked by my deck with one in it! The price is nothing, even though its restricted/banned in most tournament situations.

-- By Anonymous from Eden Prairie, MN on April 16, 2003

***** There is no better card in the game. If you have any sense at all with the magic game, you know that a lotus is the best card to draw.

-- By Anonymous from Eden Prairie on April 16, 2003

***** Black Lotus is one of the most versatile and usable cards in Magic Type 1. It can fit into any deck because of it's ability to generate any kind of colored mana. And the value is definetely NOT based on the cards ability. This card is very rare and are very seldom seen on the common market, and is even hard to find on any market for that matter. 75% of the value is the collectable value (Black Bordered, old print etc). The rest is the playvalue. Some of you should really learn more about this game and it's cards, before making comments you have no facts to refer to. Tharanduil

-- By Tharanduil from Stockholm, Sweden on December 05, 2002

***** There comes a point in life when you start to have good cards where you may want to enter into competitve Type 1 play. Let me tell you, your deck is not complete until you have this card. Forget how cool it is to lay down turn one, and realize that you can demonic tutor for it to get that one more colored mana you need, or you can make Yawgmoth's Will broken. If you disagree, then you don't have one. Sure it's pricy, but I wouldn't have won day one and T8ed on day two and three at Origins '02 without it.

-- By Paul Mastriano from Athens, OH on October 04, 2002

***** The ultimate Magic Card. Effective and the symbol of an experienced magic player.

-- By Jacob from Connecitcut, USA on August 08, 2002

***** To give it less than 5 stars is an incredibly poor reflection on the rater, as this is by far THE BEST CARD IN THE GAME and without a doubt belongs in any deck.

-- By Critic 101 from Hong Kong on August 08, 2002

***** This card is incredible, even better than

-- By critic 101 from Hong Kong on August 07, 2002

***** Black Lotus, who can forget the classic text: Add three mana of any single color of your choice to your mana pool, then is discarded. Tapping this artifact can be played an an interrupt. Clearly the hardest to find care in Magic: the Gathering ever. 5 stars. Two thumbs up.

-- By Anonymous from USA on August 03, 2002

***** OK i think it isnt the best card in Magic (ancestrall Recall) but it's an Status symbol today. Many new player havent seen an original Lotus in their life. It's only fun when u play a beta lotus that is the greatest :)

-- By M.J. from Germany Heidelberg on June 23, 2002

**** .................................................................classic.............................................................................................the best....................... ...............couldnt be better.................

  -- By D-pro G. from jax.,Fl on May 20, 2002

***** It'll beat any deck! Sure the others will be good, but without Black Lotus, they'll get run over 5th turn. Unfortunately it's restricted in T1 and banned in T1.x, Extended, and T2. Oh well! Who pays attention to DCI anyway???

-- By Braids LOST LOST LOST LOST regionals from REALITY!!! on May 06, 2002

* If you are an extremly seriose player i would buy one of these. It isa very good card but many deck using it can play without it and still be good.

-- By Braids Winsregionals from NJ USA on April 07, 2002

***** Amazing card when backed with the other power cards. First turn mox drops + a wheel of fortune/time twister are always a good thing.

-- By profoundd from canada on March 21, 2002

***** this is the best card in the game every deck needs one!Its worth the money because you can always turn around and sell it.

-- By Anonymous from Kansas city, ks usa on March 21, 2002

***** They're expensive because they're hard to find, not because they're so good. To have a Black Lotus is like having the Holy Grail of Magic Cards. End of Story.

-- By Alex Fierro from Monroe, NY on March 14, 2002

***** If you think this card is over-rated then you obviously aint used one to first turn channel fireball someone with it. Which I did in two games in a row in a tourny. Best card early game, and always a surprise factor late game when they counter you thinking your all tapped out and you drop mox/lotus/land serra, and being alpha. this is the grand daddy.

-- By BOWEN from Australia on March 14, 2002

***** This is the grand daddy of them all. The ability to cast first turn baddies makes it the best card of all time.

-- By Dave Stevens from Auburn NY on October 29, 2001

***** An absolutely outstanding way to generate fast colored mana. Its no wonder this card sells for as much as it does...... its got tremendous potential.

-- By Matthew Davis from Bronson, MI on April 15, 2001
