This is just one of the best card you can put in a blue deck. If you combine it with powerfull expensive card you almost cannot be beaten

This is Magic best counterspell, but i have burned my self to death on it so be careful to have something to spend the mana on.

i have a mana drain, when you bring a huge monster to the game at the second turn because you have countered a spell at first turn, you are understanding the value of it more and more and more... best counterspell of the game.

The power behind so many different decks....If you burn yourself to death, then you are doing something wrong :-/

You might be thinking, "why is this counterspell worth so much money?" Well despite the rarity of the card, its extra ability of providing mana is the fuel for every blue based deck in Type One. This card is essential. Plus its got a cool picture. I mean, I like the bug.

3rd or 4th turn, countered first millstone with mana drain, used it on jesters cap, other 3 millstones gone.

The best counterspell in the game. The mana it gives is useful for casting such things as Mindslaver, Pentabus, and other bombs.

its very very very good but its not the best counterspell in the game. that title belongs to force of will. no question

This was good but then they printed DAZE

How in the world is Daze even remotely on par with this card. Daze lets you pull an island up instead of paying the 2. And it only counters the spell unless they pay 1 colorless. Mana drain counters the spell (bye bye) and gives you the mana next turn to play with.

it's between this and force of will for the best counterspell...what a toss up, right? this is just great if your opponent flips up something darksteel-colossus-like with a hideaway land..."counter your spell, my turn? ok. i'll demonfire you for 16." ouch...that guy just got pwned.

While Force of Will is a very, very good counterspell, it doesn't hold a candle to this spell; and it's not even close.
Not only Mana Drain stop your opponent from executing a spell, it ALSO accelerates your mana. Properly used, this is a deadly combination.
Force of Will isn't even in this card's league...

This car helped me win several 1.5 tourneys..heck, the 4 I bought more than piad for themselves truth be told..they helped me win a black lotus. Play with the card or get beat by it and you will really understand its power in the game.

LMFAO at Bigfoot, you won a Black Lotus, SURE. But anyways, cant beleave this card has gone over $100, so glade I traded for a ton when they first came about, and still have 12 of them. :/ Sure wish I had more for more deck.

With the Magic 2010 rules' removal of mana burn, Mana Drain just became the best counterspell in the game. There is no downside to use it anymore, and thus it is strictly better than the identically-costing Counterspell. Force of Will is probably the only other counterspell whose strength is comparable, but it has a different role.

I could just cry!!!!! I had five of these cards...and I lost them to a house fire!!!
if only I knew how valuable it was...I would have grabed my box of magic cards instead of my cell phone when the fire hit...I could just cry!!! In fact I am crying!!!
Man my friend would just kill himself if he knew what he traded me for six booster packs of Weatherlight! lol!
This sucks!!!
Oh and...yah it is an awsome spell! I rarely used it myself because I only like red and black magic...but still an awsome spell!

Myria is right on all counts. this is the crown jewel of any control deck. strictly better than counterspell.

The Mana you gain from countering must be used during your upkeep, which greatly limits the card's traditional effectiveness. I miss the extra Main Phase mana bonus!
-- By ferrioso from Sioux Falls, SD on November 13, 2009
|
|
@ferrioso: What do you mean it can only be used during upkeep? It says "your next main phase" on the card and last time I checked upkeep was not a main phase.
Other than that this card became even more dumbtarded after mana burning got nixed. Nothing feels better than Mana Draining someone's FoW : - )
