Fallen Empires is generally under rated or written off as being a weak set. However, there are some really efficient cards in this set: Hymn to Tourach [tap 2 black mana and force a random discard of an opponent], Night Soil [generate 1/1 green creatures by using an opponent's graveyard], the sacrifice lands that give you 2 mana when you sacrifice them, Rainbow Vale [a fun land card in a big huge melee game]... I'd pick take an FE pack over a pack of The Dark.

Definatly an underated set, fallen empires had many great cards in it such as hymn to torach, and pump knights, also thallid decks are very popular, fun, and quite useful in many different variations of magic. I highly suggest buying a few packs to see for yourself. It also featured different artwork for the same card which was interesting.

there is about 5 cards in the whole set that i would use other then those five the set is terrible, but however if you are new to the game and want old cards this is a cheap way to get old cards

The biggest reason Fallen Empires was panned by the player base was the sets it was compared to. Antiquities, Arabian Nights, Legends and to a lesser extent The Dark were overpowered, and players expected more of the same. Fallen Empires was really the first balanced set produced. I'd put it on a par with Mercadian Masques really. Many of the cards in FE were repinted in 6th edition, and thus are extended legal until Oct 2005.

you can find some quite good cards in FE, but most of them do not have any use. however, for 2.20, i think it could be worth buying...

I bought quite a lot of Fallen Empires when I started playing Magic in 1996— it was the oldest expansion still widely available at the time. It's now 2006, it's STILL widely available, and the booster packs have gone up in price $0.70 since then. The overlying theme of the set seems to be "sacrificing lots of creatures to produce debatably useful effects". Also, saproling counters!
The best card from this set that hasn't been reprinted is Hand of Justice, which is only useful if you're playing a white weenie deck.

Interestingly enough, if you look through an old copy of InQuest Mag and average out the "ratings" of the cards by sets (cards being rated from 1 (worst) to 5 (best)), Fallen Empires had the highest overall rating of all sets released up to, and including Alliances. (Another interesting fact: Alliances had the second *lowest* overall rating.)
Simply put, this set was one of the most balanced sets released, with an average card rating of something like 3.2 (with 5 being maximum). It had no real "power" cards, but the cards that it had worked well in a very wide variety of decks.

It isnt a set that you would go insane over, but its solid. No flash (no angels, dragons, vamps...etc...) but lots of useful cards. Night Soil is a fun way to go, Icatian Store is a useful way to build mana, and Melissa Benson's artwork on Thelon's Chant will forever be my favorite art EVER in ANY set. (pretty Ok card too.) That is where FE's charm lies, in being solid, and in being VERY beautifully pictured. Wonderful to look at if nothing else. Check out Necrite 3... its so unique.

Fallen Empires is a good set to collect, it has some excellent commons like hymn to tourach, goblin grenade, high tide, night soil. It also has some excellent art - see Deep Spawn.
