-- The Magic Man
All these people here who say it's 'overrated' or not a good card clearly don't know how to play magic. It won tournaments, and saw major competitive play from the best players in the world for a reason. People who say it requires 'far fetched combos' are full of bull. If you need ANY combo with this card, you are playing wrong. It's nearly always a 3/4 or higher for 2 mana, one of which is colorless, end of story. That's ridiculous no matter what. The beauty of magic is anything can be countered, anything can be killed somehow, and never requires anything more than the right card. The beauty of this card is it's cost, and because of that, it rightfully deserves a price around $50, and a clear 5 star rating

Why did I trade 2 of these for an Akroma's Memorial and a Nimbus Maze back in 07!!! I cannot believe how much they are worth now.

wow see a lot of hate floating around for probably the best creature card ever printed. Apperently not a lot of hard-core legacy players out there writing reviews. There is a reason why this guy is one of the "must includes" in as a Legacy stample. When you get a 4/5 on turn 3 or a 5/6 on turn 4 it doesn't take long to race the opponent.

in legacy he fits right in with Bant decks that go turn 1 ponder(sorcery), force/daze (instant), fetch(land) and you probably forced a wild nactle or some other creature and/or sensi's top(artifact), wastelanded an artifact land.... Out of no where on turn 3 there are an extreme amount of possibiities for a goyf to be 4/5 or better!

This is the best 2 drop creature in legacy right now. turn 1 fetch, EOT brainstorm ext drop goyf turn 2 hes a 2/3. not bad for now. game goes on your opponent drops a creature, vindicate, pulse or something, hes now a 4/5. and only will continue to grow. not sure why people dislike this card. And to the person saying all he is, is a 0/1 clearly doesnt play magic. tell me when was the last game you played where nothing went to the graveyard. All i know is this guy is a BEAST, definately worth the 40-50$ a peice if you want to play competitively.

@ Gary Larson from The Far Side: Yes, it's bad in a deck with 59 lands. Tarmogoyf, along with Bob (Dark Confidant; you probably didn't know), are the 2 best creatures printed in Magic.

best 2 drop beater in green. the people who give this card less than 5 stars clearly dont play legacy, where hes either a 3/4 or 4/5 by turn 2, i used to play 4 of these in a dreadnought deck, but recently took them out to run blue black, and put dark confidants in their place.

@krosan grip being better than goyf, its situational, but in general a krosan gip is a great card too, i hate when someone krosan grips my dreadnought, i only hope i have a trinket mage for the counterbalance trigger on top of my library. haha

I completely agree with the guy above me, except that I don't see how playing 1 card to remove 1 creature would change card advantage one way or the other. You are each down 1 card, leaving an overall change in card advantage of 0.

It is the best "vanilla" creature in magic. Anyone who doesn't understand Tarmogoyf has never played magic competitively. People talk about him being easy to be destroyed? Really? Using any type of removal for a 2 casting cost creature loses you card advantage and tempo.

Overall, Tarmogoyf is a big distraction. It's not a win condition. It's merely a fatty that wastes your opponent's resources. Some people need to understand this.

the reason it is so good is because there isn't a better creature that costs 2 mana. no duh it can be gotten rid of, thats why removal is called removal. the thing is, your opponent needs to use a swords/path/terminate/etc. on something that you spent two mana on. just cause you run goyf doesn't mean you don't run any other creatures that are good! if they spend mana and removal getting rid of your 2 drop, then there is one less removal card to worry about. not only that, but being a 2/3 turn 2 or a 4/5 third turn is incredible enough, and if you draw him late game you can play him without tapping out. honestly the best 2CC creature in MTG and wayyyyy broken.

I want to really really like him, but the fact that he has no evasion makes me sad:-(face. Granted I now play a deck with him in it that rocks your socks, but I still feel weird having to play with a beatstick that I have to constantly protect from removal. He is still the best green creature ever. That being said, I'm going to put him at #2 best green spell in favor of the format changing Krosan Grip.

Tarmo is probably the greatest thing since sliced bread. He slices & dices his way through opposing teams all for the low price of two mana. Geez, I mean what else would you want? Potentially, the best creature in any format ever. An easy five stars.

The Goyf brings the promise of greener pastures to the south, and when you are tapped out, it is almost equivalent to a powered up artifact from the time of Gengis Khan, when the Air Elementals joined forces to create the Unknown Land above. Playing an instant on it almost guarantees that you will be present for the final conflict, with plenty left over for the rest. Didnt see that one coming, did you?

Amazing is the only thing that describes the Goyf. Anyone that thinks this card is bad needs to open their eyes and look at the top decks for legacy atm. Naya Zoo is absolutely breaking this card. Filter lands, pridemages, instant and sorcery burn along with removal to keep your path clear have your Goyfs at a solid 4/5 or 5/6 by turn 3 and an oppenent looking for help.

really, Scott kaczmarski? not played in legacy? this card is EVERYWHERE in legacy, the fastest, most under-costed fatty, maybe ever printed. every competitive deck with green runs 4 goyfs. most competitive decks w/out green run goyf, for example mono-blue merfolk will sometimes splash green for tarmogoyf, the only green card in the deck...he even makes his appearance in vintage. i do not see this card falling below 25.

While I agree that the goyf is one of the best cards out there, There are creatures that do rival It. Its extreme splashability and no draw back make it a great addition to most decks out there, But to say it's the best you would have to forget alot of creatures Like Grim Lavamancer, The original Masticore, Morphling (there is a reason he is nicknamed superman), Kird Ape (arguably the best one drop in the game), Meddling Mage (arguably the best two drop), Psychatog, Arcbound Ravager, Kataki (yes he is played extensively in Vintage), Wild Mongrel, etc. He is great but there are many cases out there where depending on your deck there are better choices. With him falling out of standard, the price as predicted is falling back down to where it should be.

not a bad card, i personally prefer a gazban ogre, a grizzly bears or an ironclaw orcs, wa! splashable in any deck, this, in addition to mutuvault and bitterblossom, forms the unholy trinity of cards that are redefining the format at present. look out for wake thrasher and figure of destiny in eventide who i predict will be mini-goyfs, wake thrasher is about as close to a 'goyf as blue will get... smash it!

Tarmogoyf is one of the best creatures ever printed in Magic’s history. There are people who don’t like it, mainly because they can’t afford their own Tarmogoyfs. Think about what Tarmogoyf actually is.

Firstly, Goyf is a two mana creature that can potentially get up to 7/8. Usually, he is only around 5/6 or 6/7, but still, a 6/7 for two mana is enough to excite anyone. Add the fact that there is no drawback to Goyf whatsoever, and you have the best creature in magic period.

Secondly, Goyf is the finisher of choice for many decks, in both standard and extended. For example, Counter-Top Goyf uses four creatures to beat for the win. They’re all green, they all cost two, and they’re all named Tarmogoyf. In fact, Tarmogoyf is so good on its own that many people, including the pros, are saying that mono-anything splash green for Goyf means a competitive deck.

And as for those who have said that $19.99 is too much for this card, they’ll be bitterly wishing that they had bought some while they still had the chance. Now, Tarmogoyf is $35, and at one point, they were breaking $50. Tarmogoyf is a creature that will be used from now until the end of the world. Decks in vintage have Goyf, decks in legacy have a lot of Goyf, decks in extended have Goyf, heck, every deck in every format should have Goyf. It’s simply that good.

It is played in 80% of extended decks, and that is the format right now...this card is soooo freaking good the pros are playing him in mono blue decks. That says something about the power of this card in the format. Look up some pro-tour top eight lists and count the goyfs. I bet 5 of 8 are playing 4.

This is exactly why I am getting more and more angry WOTC: those dirty weasels know exactly what they're doing now, and they completely manipulate the secondary market. All it would have taken to make this card fair is to have it cost GG instead of 1G. Because of the Ravnica block duals, literally any deck in Extended can, and probably should include four copies of this card. Which is exactly why a playset now costs $200 for a card that's been out of print for like a year. AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT FEELS LIKE DECISIONS TO MAKE EACH AND EVERY CARD OF THIS POWER LEVEL RARE SCREWS OVER PLAYERS THAT WANT TO COMPETE BUT CAN'T DROP FIVE OR SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS ON THE CARDS FOR ONE DECK????

Undeniably one of the best green cards , Ill tell you why its good. I have a playset of goyfs. In 90% of games I have played that were format to format, they are consistantly a 3/4 or more. Its amazing because of its mana cost; forget what you've heard; the card is always, always, always a 3/4 (and it isnt a liability as the game gets later, like predacessors kird ape, savanah lions, and Isamaru. There is no denying that it is one of the best cards ever printed. There's a reason its the most played nonland card in both standard and extended right now; people are winning championships with this card.

Everyone either hates this card or loves it. Most the people who state that this is one of the best green cards ever get flustered when you ask them there definition of "best card" and on the other side of the fence there is a swarm of players eager to shoot down any trend in magic (no matter how undeniably powerful it may be)
It is hard to stay unbiased,I want to disagree with both sides so badly, but in the end it is safely a five star card

the card is undeniably the best creature in standard. it is also played in all four formats of competitive play. hard to sneak into a vintage deck unless it is good right? anyway, on average it is actually a 4/5 for two with no draw back what so ever.

I don't see what the hub-bub is all about. I've played with this guy a few times and found that he was nothing more than a 2/3 on turn 2, and later in the game maxing out as a 4/5 or maybe a 5/6. Heck, Kird Ape can be a 2/3 on turn 1 with a Stomping Ground of Taiga in play, so I think he's better than a 'goyf, yet you can fetch a damnation with one of these guys right now. Maybe I'm missing something, but any strategy that would use the graveyard to his advantage seems to be missing the point. There are much better cards that interact with the graveyard and have some sort of evation. I'm open to suggestions here...

Much potential.

Turn 1: gemstone mine. llanowar elves

Turn 2: mountain, tarmogoyf, suspend rift bolt

Turn 3: mountain, incinerate, rift bolt comes into play, seal of fire, mine dies. Attack with your 4/5 and elves.

Your opponent is at 12, and you're attacking with a 4/5 that grows if your elves die in the attack.
The card is great with certain cards around it like the mine, seal of fire and terramorphic expanses, although I do think that 19.99 is too much for this card.

This card is semi good. Ill put a 4 star rating on it because you can get some combos going with it. There is bojuko bog, tormods crypt and a few other cards out there to stop graveyard decks. Also terror, dark banishing, reprisal, swords to plowshares and a number of other creature control cards out there folks. This card is not that good.

Think about it. Most of the card types listed wont be in your graveyard until far later in the game than you would hope t play it, unless you have a strange fondness for discarding lots of cards. It will probably only get to a max of 3/4 or 4/5. That aside, its still an excellent card for only two mana, but it really doesnt deserve all the hype or the price.

My general rule of thumb is that any card requiring other cards to be good is not a very good card. It's impossible to argue with it's success and popularity in some of the best decks out there since it's printing, though. I think it's overrated, but that shows what I know...(I also think Force of Will is overrated)

Great card. W/e it's not played in vintage/legacy and will never be because it can't kill fast enough once it's out of extended it's price will go down easly. Good card yes, but it's not the best creature ever printed no way. In standard it's in every deck because there realy isn't a substitute, it's a great beater thats it.

This went great in my deck and i got half a booster box from a friend and got three more of them. now if find out that they are going for more than twenty dolloars!? Uh, steep price for a good card. I assume something went whack somewhere to jack up the prices on this card, but hey, depending on what kind of deck, it may be worth it for those "perfection graveyard" decks.

- August 05, 2007

I see why it's good, because the format dictates that pretty much anything your opponent uses to kill this will be more expensive, and it'll most likely win the game if it goes unchecked too long. On the other hand though, $20??? Come ON. This, combined with double lands, not to mention the price of all the good win-condition rares these days, is why the Standard format has turned into the complete money-wh*re it is today. I miss the days when you could go to a tournament with a well-tuned mono-color creature deck, or a control deck with a bunch of random, semi-pointless one-ofs that generated some sort of card advantage, and still actually have a decent chance. I think Wizards has done a little TOO much well-planned market research, and we're all suffering for it right out of the wallet. Anyone else have an opinion?

Kird ape rotates out with 9th... and the card by itself isn't too good, that's why it was initially cheap. But throw in serious synergy and you got a serious creature that costs 2 and is very splashable

The 0/1 creature that can becomes 7/8 for 1G. This is very great. I have 4 of them. Great card.... but I can't rate it more than 3 because it's not have "strength" if it goes by itself. I agree it's dependent creature. Cards like Baneslayer is independent creature, which means her power and combat abilities are great since the beginning. However, to use this card, you must spend the time to build this creature until it maxed out (usually between 4/5 or 5/6, I never get it 7/8 because there's no walkers deck in legacy). By the time it maxed out, it'll be more powerful than any other creatures! Fetch lands, instants, and sorceries must add to your deck. Be sure put no removal spells like Swords to Plowshire because it will not affected your goyf....

A mediocre green 2-drop. A terrible card for anyone who ever intends to play a casual game, since it will not under any circumstances be better than a 3/4 for two, and ordinarily will be a 2/3 or 1/2. (instants, sorceries, and creature control happens, but hardly anyone plays with artifacts or much land or enchantment destruction) A vanilla 3/4 for two is nice, but its too situational to be practical in casual, where land, enchantments, artifacts, and plansewalkers never hit graveyards unless you build a deck to do it or its so late-game that the lower casting cost wont help you much. You can build a $500 deck around it with lots of sac-artifacts, fetchland, and off-color spells, but that tends to result in a deck with zero cohesive structure besides "run 4 of every expensive card in the format, have so many penalty-free dual lands that color isn't an issue, and win, because it works". A card for people who like winning easily by having more money than their opponents, a waste of time and money for anyone who actually likes playing the game. Decent in limited as well, but so is goblin piker...

Here is my 2 cents worth... First, Forget for a moment that Tarmogoyf can get bigger. That involves the use of other cards, and I am rating Tarmogoyf on its own merits, not on how well it can fit into some farfetched 5 or 6 card combo that has a million to 1 shot of actually happening in a real game. The reality is that what you have here is a 0/1 creature that is basically useless without involving other cards. That's not my opinion, that's a fact. It is also a fact that the more cards you have in your deck that are essentially useless alone, like this one is, the greater your odds are of losing. Deny it if you want, but you know it's true. I understand, though. If I had spent the money on Tarmogoyf singles, I too would probably be trying very hard to justify my purchase.

I heard somewhere that 85% of all statistics are made up on the spot. Anyway, this card is above average but also highly over-rated by some. It's all situational. If you are playing against a deck that can't handle this guy, he can kill in just a few turns, but if your opponent is equipped to deal with him, he probably won't be out long enough to do you any good at all.

A mediocre rare and possibly them ost overrated card of all time in the game of Magic. He's rarely anything more than a 2/3 by the third or fourth turn and after that usually won't make it past evolving into a 4/5 or 5/6 if your opponent hasn't fried him by then. A big fat "meh" for this guy. There are plenty of other ways I'd rather be spending two mana.

This card is way overrated. By itsellf its only a 0/1 and relies on farfetched combos to be good. People say its good because it gets bigger, but it dies to so many other cards. It does nothing against my control deck, I laugh at it when I run white weenie, and I combo out before it gets anywhere near lethal against my combo decks.
