I've played this game since 1998, and I am going to give you an example of how this card is played in the decks that are the reason for the high price of this common. Turn 1: Gitaxian Probe, cycle Street Wraith, Swamp, Dark Ritual, Mana Crypt, Chromatic Sphere, Chromatic Star, Manamorphose, Lotus Petal, CABAL RITUAL, Yawgmoth's Will, CABAL RITUAL, ...Play your graveyard... , Mind's Desire, ...play your deck... , Tendrils of Agony or Brain Freeze or etc. With Mind's Desire Cabal Ritual can produce 5 mana at no cost. I also use this card in my all common storm deck with Empty the Warrens. I use sac. lands that help in obtaining threshold. Storm decks are tier 1, so the reviewers before me claiming to have experience under their belt that rate this card 1 star obviously are giving themselves too much credit. They should try playing online in the tourney room for once!

I love this card in my Dredge/Gravestorm deck. Turn 2 - BBBBB almost every time. And if you're wondering how, easy. Turn 1 Underground River/Sea or City of Brass, Careful Study(U) - draw 2, discard stinkweed imp(2B) or golgari grave-troll(4G) and something else. If it's stinkweed I have to play 1 more spell to create threshold unless I can pop a Lotus Petal.

this card is real good if you play combo in legacy, the threshold shouldnt be a probleme, its like having 8 dark ritual in the deck.

I don't care what any of the other's say this cards rules when combined with Dark Rituals, Yawgmoth's Will and Drain Life...Play the Cabals first so you use the threshold and so they go to the graveyard and can be used again after you play the Yawgmoth's Will. Add all the mana up and drain life...I have got up to 30 mana b4 and I'm not a player that likes slow combo decks this is just a side thing for most of my main mono black decks.

An excellent card. Dark rituals have served me faithfully, and this blows them out of the water.

I use this and dark ritual, i use them in combination with jet medallions. When threshold is accomplished i now pay 1b fo5b, quite the deal i think.

I give it four stars because, if you have a few buried alives and manage to get a few more cards in your graveyard, then this actually does better than dark ritual. Think about it, dark ritual technically increases mana pool by two, but if you happen to have this and threshold, then it gives you three more. Not the best in the beginning, but it can really help those shades if your a little later and your dark rituals are already used. Not the best, but not nearly as bad as people say.

You dont have to loose card advantage with a card like this and you dont use it in place of a dark ritual(which I agree is preferable to this). You use BOTH and REPLACE LAND-cards. This makes a fast deck even faster, just keep a drainlife or consume spirit handy in case you need to dump mana. Though you need skill and a very well balanced deck to reap the rewards of having unreliable but flexible mana access, its not for everyone.

I agree with reviewer #11 - this isn't Dark Rituals' replacement, but when used it addition, it has its benefits. The whole reason I use it at all is if I already have 4 Dark Rituals, but still come up mana screwed, and can't afford to add more lands. Decent for Mercenary decks, where you /need/ a frickin' load of mana that late to continue searching out Merc's. I can usually hit Threshold after a few turns using instants and saccing creatures anyway. Anyway... not perfect, but when already maxxed on Dark Rituals, it's an option.

Considering hard hitters in a sac deck are phyrexian plaguelord and fallen angel or even havoc demon this card can be very nice to have. if i get this card it usually takes me from a maybe win to a guarenteed one.

This really isn't as good as a Dark Ritual...but late in the game it can be helpful in combination with a Drain Life. But, if you have four of these and four Dark Rituals, it can only help you. It's not a replacement for Dark Ritual, but more of a back-up.

Dark Ritual is back! Well, sort of... The threshold of this card is a nice bonus, but it lacks true speed. That's why Dark Ritual was so successful. Cabal Ritual might not live up to that.

playable in storm deck (ATS)...
to the guy above, a good dredge deck does'nt need so much mana to win at the third turn

If you think about it though... if you attatch it to isocron scepter, it will be of infinite use.your mana will keep coming, but at a price which still does not make this much competition for dark ritual.

I for one agrey with viwer number 2 this card stinks. even if you have a threshold it the same as a dark ritual it's just wrong

i am in total agreement with reviewer number two this card sucks a** and is nothing. you lose card advantage for just one more black mana (counting tap out advantage) and with most decks you reach threshold and you already have all the mana you need for your deck so therefore this card sucks.

ugh. this card blows and anybody who does not realize that is obviously not to great a player. As a DCI member, I have never ever seen or heard anybody talk about this card in a good way. Its horrid. The person in review #1 is obviously a rookie who knows nothing about the game.
